Fried Green Tomatoes

Ever since I saw the movie Fried Green Tomatoes with Kathy Bates I have been intrigued by this odd Southern dish.  Up until now I never even tasted fried green tomatoes. Growing up in Canada and even now living in Northern Washington there isn’t really a whole lot of “Southern” food being consumed around these parts.

I ended up with a ton of green tomatoes that never ripened out in my garden this season. It was so sad. I decided to turn lemons into lemonade or in this case, unripe tomatoes into fried green tomatoes. This is a vegan recipe  but you can easily  use eggs for the batter if you wish.

Chop your green tomatoes into 1/2 inch pieces and sprinkle each side with salt and pepper.
Get the pan ready for frying by heating olive or other vegetable oil on medium heat

In a bowl mix 1 cup soymilk with 1 teaspoon cornstarch
or, you can just use eggs with a little milk whisked in it if you aren’t vegan.

Mix 1 cup cornmeal with 1 cup flour.

Dip the tomatoes into the “egg” wash and then into the flour making sure to coat both sides well.
Place in the hot oil and let each side fry for about 2 minutes. Serve with Salsa or Sour Cream.

Yummy!!!

They really look yummy! I believe I can use the should-be-red tomatoes they sell at our grocery stores and fry them… I haven't heard of frying them up to now, can you believe that?

  3. I think you can use red tomatoes but if they are too ripe they might get mushy. @ Kitty, let me know how it goes!
